13 Impressions, your Two Cents?
Mid-July already, time is flying fast, as I get old. Wonder if everybody feels the same thing? I’ve a lot at my plate now that it’s my job to re-invigorate EXIST GLOBAL. Yes, I have to put it in caps.
I’d like to talk about a couple of realizations — related to what I do for Exist and the (outsourced) software product development industry at large (or the world which I try to keep up with).
1) A lot of people still don’t understand what we do in the marketing team. Or what goes on in our day to day operations.
2) Some still think of marketing as an entity or a department. Sometimes I kinda do, but maybe I’m thinking of it just for the sake of formality.
3) Communication is just as important as marketing. Not really a realization, this one, but more of a reminder to myself and to you.
4) You can help people become obsessively pro-active, not by constant pushing, but finding the “kiliti” or that which makes someone tick. Again, maybe just a reminder to myself.
5) I can be really productive for hours but when something hits me, I’d need to hit the volleyball court or do a 30-min run to get myself back in the zone.
6) Economic recovery can be quickly achieved if we make sure (the right) infrastructure is in place. Same thing applies to how a software is built. When the platform (and/or software building blocks) is/are in place, software gets built better, faster.
7) BUT that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t prioritize EDUCATION. World is flat. Outsourcing is now service globalization. Anyone can make a difference. Every Juan has equal opportunity to succeed. But without proper education, without the private sector’s initiatives to bridge this GAP between what is taught in the academe and skills that are actually needed by the industry, without communities that encourage knowledge sharing — well, we better get used to being mediocre.
And speaking of being good. People have gotta step it up and make a deal with themselves to do things FAR BETTER than what they’ve already done. Only place to go is forward. There are a myriad of things we know about our comfort zone. BUT we have to step out of it, at least once every week
9) In the world of software development, you’ll encounter many geeks. At the end, you’ll end up considering yourself a geek too, one way or another.
10) The Philippines can create innovative, disruptive technologies but we don’t have the arsenal for sales and marketing. This is a “food for thought” from today’s PSIA quarterly meeting shared by Fermin Taruc of Gurango Software.
11) The positive aura (and success of the recent national election) that the NoyBi administration brings — transcends political ramifications, and has stirred up hopes of a better ITO industry. (Well, it might be a given cause and effect in itself.) BUT what I’m trying to say is that the private sector now has become more aggressive (even with lack of support) and can now become even more aggressive, right?
12) It doesn’t matter if Exist runs its own programs to circumvent the talent gap issue. It doesn’t matter if there are other initiatives (DevCon, BPAP’s Project Eden, PSIA capability and enablement trainings) that seem to just duplicate everything. What matters is that the END which is the advancement of our IT capabilities justifies the means.
13) OK, maybe that’s too bold to say.
