Open Source and Exist — a remarkable history of feats

Here is a copy of the reply that I sent to Brian Dooley for his research on Open Source implementations in APAC. Brian, an independent technology and market analyst operating out of New Zealand, has written many reports on Open Source for a number of analyst firms, including Cutter Consortium, Springboard, and Gartner.

I was hoping to get the help of the other organizations in the region to pitch in and help Brian with his research, in which the objective is to produce a report, which should serve to highlight Open Source within our region. This’ll (can) serve as your guide.

In the early part of the 21st centry, we worked painstakingly to deliver Gluecode Joe — a Java application platform relying on the Apache Geronimo application server. The company behind Gluecode Joe called Gluecode was eventually bought by IBM in 2005 through the leadership of our CEO Winston Damarillo; Gluecode Joe was repackaged and subsequently released as IBM’s WASCE (WebSphere Application Server Community Edition).

As you will see in our Technology page, Exist has always been trailblazing in the the field of software / product development and technologies. In the beginning, we also worked with Apache Jetspeed, one of the earlier portals.

During the same time, we became heavily involved with Apache ServiceMix and Apache ActiveMQ. You (referring to Brian) will see some of our contributors here www.g2ix.com/careers under the Tech Achievers section. The Exist team worked alongside the Open Source project committers to build the first SOA platform provided as an open source distribution. All developers (involved in the project) became OS committers to either Apache ActiveMQ or Apache ServiceMix, a testament to their engineering prowess.

In 2007, LogicBlaze and LogicBlaze Fuse (the said SOA platform) were acquired by IONA Technologies, and subsequently acquired by Progress Software in September, 2008.

FUSE is now powering companies such as Sabre Holdings, which in 2006 was evaluating the project while FUSE was being developed by LogicBlaze and Exist. Sabre is the company behind Travelocity, Sabre Travel Network, and Sabre Airline Solutions.

We were also pioneering developers for Jetty, a Java-based HTTP server and servlet container (application server) and open source project under the Apache 2.0 License.

In addition, some of our engineers are founding developers of Eclipse IAM. We’ve made significant contributions to the integration of Eclipse IAM to the Buckminster project and a number of our developers were awarded full Eclipse Committer status in 2007.

As proponents of OS in the Philippines, in the late 2008, we inked a monumental partnership agreement with Microsoft. Together with MS, we set out to build a universal infrastructure for cross-language development, with full interoperability and multi-platform compatibility — this is the NPanday project.

To this day, we continue to utilize OS technologies, leverage on them to reduce the total cost and time required to develop and deploy software products, and participate actively in the community. We do not just participate in the community, we also position ourselves as thought leaders having co-hosted the Philippine Open Source Summit in June 2008 — in fact, Brett (VP of Product Development at MaestroDev) might mention that we “gave birth” to the first Filipina VP in the prestigious ASF — Deng Ching.

Here’s one of the recent mentions of OS in the PH, which you might find useful: http://www.zdnetasia.com/philippine-open-source-developers-thriving-62062805.htm.

*I introduced Mike Lim, our VP of Engineering at Exist, in this email to Brian as well as Brett, who is going to talk to Brian more about our involvement with other OS technologies, namely Apache Maven, Apache Continuum, Apache Archiva, and Selenium.

So — if you’ve got something to add, just let me know and I’d be happy to connect you to Brian. Cheers!
