Last weekend, me and my colleagues (@dude_, @marjune & @eyds) decided to watch TED Talks while waiting for Banchetto to open. In the middle of session @marjune asked me to pause  this scene. I thought he wanted me to stop for a bit so we can discuss and digest it, but rather he wanted me to make a blog post out of it :), so here it goes. 

 

I know there are many blogs about it and I listed a few of them below. So as not to avoid duplication I would rather point out to the scene where we paused. He called this the Goldern Circle. I strongly suggest to watch the talk.

So I decided to write a blog post, I am not a good writer/blogger so please feel me. 

 

Everyday,  I have been asked for questions like: a) What is the URL of this and that?, b) How do I change my password? c) Where could I download software for..? d) How can I print this? The fact that we already gave this on their first encounter, people forget it. 

 

Recently, I’ve been using Macbook for my work and now n00b on OSX. I also came across Bonjour which is a great technology from Apple. It’s a service discovery protocol that allows you to find resources such as printer, scanners, and services on the network using Domain Name System (DNS). I played with the protocol and implemented a few services within our network. (So I won’t be asked again? :) 

 

For Mac Users, just open your Safari Browser, (Bookmarks -> Show all your Bookmark Collections and Select Bonjour). You will be presented with different Bookmarks that are available on your network.

 

For Windows users, first you need to install Bonjour for Windows and add the BonjourFoxy Plugin. After installation, Open your Firefox and select BonjourFoxy on your Sidebar.

 

Since BonjourFoxy does not work on linux/Ubuntu out of the box, `it can be built and run with Avahi’s Bonjour compatibilty layer’. Some applications work nicely with it thou. 

 

If your installation is successful, you should be able to see these on your browser.
